This painting depicts an event in 1703.  The Persian Shah Hussein made a gift of an elephant to Peter the Great of Russia.  The elephant was carried by ship along the Caspian See where it traveled through Russia on foot.  Russian peasants who had never seen an elephant before were held in awe and amazement. The elephant was housed in St. Petersburg and his daily "hygienic" walks were down Pershchektinaya Street, originally known as NEVSKY PROSPEKT.
