ART NOTATION: Martiros Sarian (Saryan) is recognized as the greatest Armenian artist of the 20th Century. Early in his career from 1910-1913, Sarian traveled extensively in Turkey, Egypt and Iran. In this period Sarian worked in tempra. Most artist at this time were looking for inspiration from the west such as mountains, lakes and cities. Sarian looked towards the east with a goal to understand and become familiar with the unusual light, sadows and the characteristics of its people. The painting is signed in Russia lower right and dated 1912. An inscription verso in Russian reads "M. Saryan, Mountain Abul Caravan, tempra 1912". The expert opinion suggests the artist synthesized his vision of the area suggesting the slow ways of its people. Camels grazing and drivers dress in traditional white garments pitted against sharp dark blues, shadows and green trees. The artist succeeded in capturing the greatness of nature and the everyday life of its people. We consider this to be the finest example of the early period of the great Armenian artist ever to be offered in this country. Noting it is accompanied by the Certificate mentioned under the provenance.
